@lewiscowles1986@phpc.social @nixCraft Mmm... that depends on the job. A salaried employee with a job description that includes on-call can be expected to do some work from time to time outside of normal business hours.

...unless you're forbidden to work from home, of course. :-P

@dolmen @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social @nixCraft As far as I'm aware: No, not in my jurisdiction. (MA, USA.)

In Canada, salary is essentially reserved for management and a few specific classes of professionals. Otherwise, you must be paid hourly, there are also explicit restrictions against making employees work >40 hr weeks.

@msb @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social I'm a software developer -- where does that fall in Canada's regulations?

Despite being on call, I don't work more than 40 hours per week. If I'm working in the evening, I take some time off the next day.

It's been a while since I dug into that, but there is a federal labor standards act, and accompanying guidelines, each province and territory have their own legislation as well, but, I believe they are all fairly well aligned with the federal rules. Some industries, like banking and telecom that cross provincial borders are also federally regulated.
